If you want a sheet that costs less, dries in an hour and never needs ironing, buy microfiber or a poly-cotton blend. Neither choice is wrong. They suit different rooms and different routines, and most families end up owning both. Below is how the three fabrics actually behave on the bed, in the washing machine and over the years, so you can pick the right one for each room in your home.

The three fabrics in one minute

Egyptian cotton is cotton grown along the Nile with unusually long fibers (long staple). Long fibers spin into a finer, stronger yarn with fewer loose ends, which is why a good Egyptian cotton sheet feels smooth without feeling slippery, breathes well and lasts for years.

Poly-cotton is a blend, usually somewhere between half and two thirds polyester, the rest cotton. It borrows the wrinkle resistance and quick drying of polyester while keeping some of the cool, natural feel of cotton.

Microfiber is 100% polyester woven from very fine threads. It is light, very smooth, the most affordable of the three and the fastest to dry. It also holds a little more heat than cotton.

How they feel on a hot night

This is where the difference is biggest. Cotton is a natural fiber that absorbs moisture and lets air pass through the weave. On a warm Cairo night with the window open, an Egyptian cotton sheet stays cool against the skin and dries any sweat quickly. That is the “crisp” feeling people describe.

Cotton stays cool against the skin on warm nights.

Long-staple cotton weaves into a fine, smooth surface that still lets air through.

Microfiber feels silky and soft from the first night, but polyester does not absorb moisture the way cotton does, so on a very hot night it can feel warmer. In an air-conditioned bedroom this hardly matters, and many people prefer the smoother touch. Poly-cotton sits in the middle: cooler than microfiber, a bit less airy than pure cotton.

Washing, drying and ironing

Egyptian cotton likes a warm wash (around 40°C), dries in a few hours on a line in the Egyptian sun, and wrinkles. If you want it perfectly smooth you iron it, or you fold it straight from the line while it is still slightly warm, which removes most of the creases. Over the first few washes it softens noticeably.

Poly-cotton and microfiber come out of the wash almost wrinkle-free and dry within the hour.

Microfiber is the opposite: wash it cool (30°C), and it comes out of the machine almost wrinkle-free and is dry within an hour. Two rules matter. Skip fabric softener, because it coats the fine fibers and makes them feel waxy, and keep it away from high heat, which can damage polyester. Poly-cotton is the easiest of all: warm wash, quick dry, a light iron only if you like a very crisp look.

We learned most of this the hard way. The rooms we run get their sheets changed and washed every few days, and over hundreds of washes you quickly see which fabric keeps its colour, which one pills and which one still looks new after a year. That experience is what shaped both of our lines.

How long each one lasts

A well-made Egyptian cotton sheet is a long-term purchase. Long-staple cotton resists pilling, and the fabric gets softer rather than thinner. With normal weekly washing you should expect many years of use.

Microfiber lasts well for its price, but after a year or two of frequent washing it can start to pill (small fuzzy balls) and build up static. Because it is inexpensive, most people simply replace it. Poly-cotton holds up very well: the polyester keeps the shape and the colour, and the cotton keeps it comfortable. It is the fabric of choice for beds that are changed very often, like a child’s bed.

Price, and what you are actually paying for

Egyptian cotton costs more for two honest reasons: the raw cotton is more expensive than ordinary cotton or polyester, and it is spun and woven finer, which takes more time. You are paying for the fiber, not for a logo. Microfiber is the cheapest to produce, and poly-cotton sits in between.

A useful way to compare is price per year of use rather than price per sheet. A cotton sheet that lasts six or seven years often costs less per year than two or three microfiber sets bought one after another. For a bed that is used every night, that math usually favours cotton. For a guest bed used a few times a month, microfiber or poly-cotton wins.

Which fabric for which room

Your own bedroom: 100% Egyptian cotton. You spend eight hours a night here; this is where breathability and softness pay off most.

Children’s rooms: poly-cotton or microfiber. It gets washed constantly, dries fast and does not need ironing.

The guest room: microfiber or poly-cotton. Quick to wash and put back before the next visit.

Your second set, for change days: an affordable poly-cotton or microfiber set means your cotton set has time to dry properly and lasts longer.

A wedding or housewarming gift: Egyptian cotton, boxed. It is the fabric people remember.

How to tell real Egyptian cotton from a blend

The label should say 100% Egyptian cotton, not “Egyptian cotton blend” or “made with Egyptian cotton”. New cotton feels cool and slightly crisp, never slippery. Hold the fabric to your mouth and breathe through it: cotton lets air pass easily. And be realistic about price. Genuine long-staple cotton cannot be the cheapest sheet on the shelf.

Egyptian cotton for your own bed, quick-drying blends for change days and guest rooms.

What we make, and why we make both

Our flat sheets come in two lines because homes need both. Signature is 100% Egyptian cotton with a high thread count, packed in a gift box. Essentials is poly-cotton or microfiber, made to resist wrinkles and dry fast. Microfiber is polyester, which does not absorb moisture, so on a very hot night without air conditioning it can feel warmer. In an air-conditioned room most people find it perfectly comfortable.

Does Egyptian cotton wrinkle?
Yes, like all natural cotton. Folding the sheet straight from the line while it is still slightly warm removes most creases. If you want it perfectly smooth, a quick iron on a cotton setting does the job.

Can I use fabric softener on microfiber sheets?
It is better not to. Softener coats the very fine polyester fibers, which makes them feel waxy and less breathable over time. Half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse keeps microfiber soft without the coating.

Which fabric is best for sensitive skin?
100% cotton is the usual recommendation because it is a natural, breathable fiber that does not trap heat or sweat against the skin.
